MAM | CAPACETE Institutional Partnership

The Museum of Modern Art in Rio and the CAPACETE residency and artistic-cultural exchange program started an institutional partnership in March 2020, when the project to transfer part of CAPACETE’s activities to the museum began to be developed. Initially designed to take place in the museum’s physical space, at its headquarters in Parque do Flamengo, the project had to undergo adaptations in order to be able to start in virtual spaces while the quarantine resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic lasts. The partnership between CAPACETE and MAM is leveraged by the PetraGold Group’s sponsorship of MAM.

The partnership is part of the broader project of MAM to restore education to a central role in the institution, defined early as a school museum. The goal is to reopen the School Block, the pavilion dedicated to teaching and artistic practice, which was the first building to be construct at the museum’s final headquarters.

The purpose of the MAM partnership | CAPACETE is to develop artistic residencies, to foment research, international exchanges and carry out public programming of dialogues and other activities in the museum space. The partnership is expected to last two years.

“The MAM partnership | CAPACETE brings the opportunity to open the museum for a new interaction with cultural projects of great relevance on the national and international scene ”, says the executive director of MAM, Fabio Szwarcwald. “MAM is supporting the processes that support the theory-practice of art, seeking reflection. MAM allows itself to be a more organic institution, more connected with society ”.

Created in 1998 by the artist Helmut Batista, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, CAPACETE is the oldest and most structured program of artistic and cultural exchange and residency in Brazil. Headquartered in the neighborhood of Glória, next to the center of Rio, CAPACETE makes public presentations in various models, training for professionals (CAPACETE School) and for children (Small Laboratory), open courses, experimental cuisine, library, collection and publications. More than 450 professionals from different countries have already gone through the program.

“CAPACETE really has a very strong international tradition and trust and many international partnerships that can help to leverage a specific program within MAM. I think Fabio Szwarcwald knew how to understand this and wants to join forces to make a bigger program ”, says Helmut Batista. “We always considered that CAPACETE’s performance should be in your region. MAM is within our reach. The School Block was the flagship of its time – it belonged to the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage – it is there hibernating and now it will go through a transformation ”, says Helmut. “The invitation came in very handy in the process that CAPACETE had been going through: a transformation phase, with Camilla Rocha Campos at the helm, CAPACETE becoming less and less my person. This is a desired, provoked and encouraged process. ”

“Despite its longevity, CAPACETE is a small program, which operates in a very restricted field. The visibility that MAM can give to CAPACETE is also incredible, we will be able to insert ourselves more in the Brazilian context. The programs that we designed for MAM are basically what we have always done: residences in the format of seminars, ”says Helmut.

“We have around 20 to 25 residents each year from different countries; we offer programs of 3, 6 and 12 months in duration ”, says Camilla Rocha Campos, artistic director of CAPACETE. “Our 1-year program is the backbone of our activities. We act as a center of thought where seminars, public speeches, workshops, personalized visits, study trips and experimental art projects take place. The MAM partnership | CAPACETE will be an exercise in cohabitation and respect between a Brazilian historical organization and an independent (historical) space. CAPACETE brings dialogue on new strategies on how to create partnerships that work with less bureaucratic, community structures, and aims to support research and artistic practices that dialogue critically and beyond the mainstream art system ”.

Through continuous activities, CAPACETE’s mission is to create situations and develop strategies that provide concrete and real alternatives to the shifting field of art. The updates and residency programs already carried out were designed to reflect the interdisciplinary character of contemporary ethical-aesthetic practices and promote efforts that articulate the theoretical world with artistic presentations in different formats and dynamics, and for different audiences.

Capacete residence at MAM

For 2 years, starting in May 2020, CAPACETE is in residence at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de
Janeiro (MAM). The action, which can also be understood as an important partnership between both
institutions, is part of the transformation process of the museum, guided by the tripod
art-education-culture. At MAM, CAPACETE will participate in the reactivation of the Bloco Escola
(School Block) and will have its activities, agenda and research processes integrated into the
museum and with this gesture, MAM Rio assumes a living learning platform at national and
international level, supporting art not only in its purpose, but also in its bases of dialogue
and experimentation.

Mission

Our globalized contexts are structured by an unequal social distribution of labour and wealth, increasingly moulded by speculative market-based economics. Many of today’s cultural manifestations are large-scale events that are too often either directed at a generic public or a restricted elite. This reduces and neutralizes the concrete ethical and political reach of art, as well as its potential for fostering discussion and inspiring other ways of working, thinking, relating, and living.

Our intention is to build situations and develop strategies that provide a concrete and actual alternative to this state of affairs. Our program is designed to reflect the cross-disciplinary character of contemporary aesthetic practices, by working with artists and thinkers whose endeavours articulate the theoretical world with artistic presentations in several formats and dynamics and for different audiences. By challenging the actual state of culture, economy and education, our primary function will embrace self-organized, artist-run, participatory and collaborative modes of action as a fundamental part of the content and structure of its activities.

Such initiatives can only be developed over time, by means of the simultaneous activation and advancement of various forms of exchange, distribution, and production. Our intention is to remain responsive and fluid throughout this process, adjusting our strategies, tactics, and aims as we develop. An integral aim of our program is to continually expand our platform of exchange, by bringing in new participants and interlocutors, fostering relationships with different institutions and organizations, as well as by deepening our ties and relationships with established collaborators.

CAPACETE acts at the intersection of various social and professional fields, thus requiring the selected participants to fully embrace an open and “horizontal” dialogue, and to actively engage in program activities by instigating projects that can in turn act as platforms for disseminating information, promoting active responses, and generating public debate.

History 1998-2014

CAPACETE Entertainment is an autonomous non-profit art initiative founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1998 and active in São Paulo since 2009. Our activities gravitate around an international artistic research-based residency program for artists, critics and curators, among other professionals related to culture and critical thinking, to spend a period of 3 up to 6 months in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and/or São Paulo, Brazil. Over the past 15 years our programs received more than 300 professionals and included the organization of public presentations and screenings, talks and seminars, workshops and performances, publications and exhibitions among different events, actions and strategies to provide content, and develop the local context. CAPACETE Entertainment is a platform for research and time-based practices that seek to engage with different systems of production and address local communities and practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines. We support different speeds for production and research by providing the residents with a priviledged situation for exchange in continuous conversations, facilitating the interaction with the local context thus understood as the urban spaces of the city, its history and inhabitants.

CAPACETE Entertainment cooperates in a regular basis with several governmental agencies, foundations and art institutions as the Danish Art Council, Office Contemporary Art Norway, Mondrianfund, Goethe Institut – São Paulo, French Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Cyprus Government, Resó/Piedmont in Italy, GASWORKS (London) among others and has recently started a partnerships with CALQ (Québec/Canada) and AIR-WARSAW (Poland). CAPACETE has participated in 8 editions of the International Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro, 3 editions of the São Paulo Biennial of Art, and 2 editions of the Mercosul Biennial, among other festivals and exhibitions.

Between 2010 and 2012, CAPACETE received in its program more than 70 professionals, published 5 books, offered more than 20 workshops, and organized over 150 public presentations. CAPACETE Entertainment activities are public and free, and the participation in the programs is made by a procedure of selection by open free calls related to specific programs designed with our partners. In 2010, as part of the program developed for the 28th Bienal de Arte de São Paulo, CAPACETE organized s series of workshops called “Answering machine” coordinated by Jorge Menna Barreto and Helmut Batista, and which included 9 workshops taught by a group of international critics and curators.

– EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS –

Public talk by Ricardo Basbaum

CAPACETE supports the specific research of its residents and to simultaneously provide local context free educational programs in various formats and durations. These activities include the presentation of the work performed by residents, and presentations from other local and foreign guests. Since 2007, CAPACETE promotes continuiada a training program, lasting 10 months, and for a select group of up to 15 young professionals.

In January 2012, in collaboration with the Spanish artist Daniel Steegmann Mangrané was organized the first edition of the Summer University, and lasting 3 weeks, promotes six workshops for a group of 14 young professionals, and 4 public performances. In January 2013 came the second edition.

The workshops aim to give local professionals the opportunity to work with a diverse range of professionals and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines that are connected with critical thinking in art. In turn, the public presentations seek to open the program of research to a wider audience, thus promoting critical public debate.

The ROAD program also contributes to expand our educational commitment, as participants realize that residents lectures and workshops in some of the cities visited. ROAD / BOAT was an edition held in the Upper Rio Negro, Amazonas, in which seven artists who work at education, met with teachers Yanomami 4 and 5 of his students, to discuss the challenges of education in specific contexts.

A Brief History of CAPACETE  CAPACETE grows out of the CAPACETE Entertainments residency program.  CAPACETE entertainments is a non-profit autonomous initiative for cross-disciplinary investigation, production and public debate, designed to promote a diverse range of initiatives, most of which were specifically related to Brazil and the Latin American context. Based in Rio de Janeiro since 1998, as well as in São Paulo since 2009, CAPACETE has networked with diverse actors and initiatives of local, national and international political-socio-cultural life, with the perspective of developing medium to long-term collaborations. Within private and public cultural institutions and the academic world, CAPACETE has sought to dissect forms of subjectivities inherent in contemporary life by producing different ways of thinking and new forms of action within its local context. CAPACETE has undertaken activities such as seminars, publications, national and international exhibitions, artists and authors’ research residencies, as well as multidisciplinary presentations of work that engage with a plurality of contemporary critical practices. The residency project will continue to exist by working to assist projects initiated by ex-residents. The new CAPACETE program outlined in this text will start its activities based on knowledge acquired from our longstanding experience with former residents and collaborators.   CAPACETE basic activities are the following  1 – Annual program (restricted to selected participants)  CAPACETE is a new one-year program in the city of Rio de Janeiro 13 international participants, selected by open call, dedicated to research and practice in the arts and critical thought. It will start its first edition in March 2015. This program is neither a school neither an art residence; it shall be an experimental program were all participants and contributors live an active space of horizontal discussions. The programs offers 10 seminars and more than 40 public talks, besides studio visits and other collective activities. Three tutors, Amilcar Packer, Manuela Moscoso and Helmut Batista will follow the group along the year. The mission of CAPACETE is to promote discussion and discourse among the society as a whole and to promote knowledge exchange in the field of visual contemporary culture.  2 – Wednesday public talks This program consists of talks and presentations by different professionals from different disciplines. The program of each month is designed in accordance with the given seminar of the month and is programmed one month ahead and made public on our webpage. These programs may also include book presentations, musical events, performances etc.   3 – Editions and bookshop and library We have a book shop which is open every Wednesday through Friday from 15 to 19:00. We sell our published books and others.
