Jorge de León (Guatemala, 1976) lives and works in Guatemala. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte Rafael Rodríguez Padilla. His work addresses urban life and the political and social situation in Guatemala and Latin America. Between 1996 and 2002, he worked as a tattoo artist in the city’s marginalized areas. His solo exhibitions include: “Crónicas del caos,” GAMMA Galería, Mexico (2022); “E nos dias adversos,” Projetos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City (2020); “Nos prósperos dias,” Projetos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City (2017); “Vertigo,” Centro Cultural Correos Municipais, Guatemala City (2013); and “COLONIA,” Galeria La Botica Cultural da Cidade da Imaginação (2012), among others.
He has also participated in group exhibitions in Canada, Spain, the United States, Mexico, Central America, Switzerland, Ireland, and Chile. He has taken part in biennials in Spain, Nicaragua, and Guatemala; in 2004, he won the Glifo de Plata at the XIV Paiz Art Biennial and the Bancafé Young Creators Award. His work is held in the collections of the Reina Sofía Museum, Madrid; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; and the Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco, among others.
