Javier Montes is a novelist and essayist. He writes about contemporary art for publications such as Artforum (@artforum) and El País (@el_pais). Born in Madrid, he has studied or worked in Buenos Aires, Paris, and Florence. For over fifteen years, he has spent long periods in Rio de Janeiro, which has become a sort of second home. During his residency, he will work on Os Cem Mil (“The Hundred Thousand”), the book that concludes his trilogy on modern Brazil. The series already includes Luz del Fuego (Fósforo, 2023)—about the activist, performer, urban guerrilla, and pioneer of feminism and naturism who caused a sensation in Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s—and Varados en Río (Anagrama, 2016), which explores the lives of various foreign writers who lived in Rio during the 20th century: Stefan Zweig, Elizabeth Bishop, Manuel Puig, and Rosa Chacel.
