Bel Portugal

Isabel Portugal (1982, Rio de Janeiro) holds a PhD in algae biotechnology. A marine biologist and holder of a master’s degree in aquaculture, she has pursued an academic career in various parts of the world. An advocate for algae, she returned to Brazil just over five years ago and leverages her international connections and collaborations to popularize science. She believes there is significant untapped potential for deeper exploration at the intersection of art and science, and she describes herself as a natural scientist and “artist.”

She has worked on establishing an algae laboratory in the Amazon (Pará), provided consulting services for spirulina production at various companies, and is a co-founder of Devolverde (@devolverde_of). Currently, she is a research fellow at the Rio de Janeiro State Fisheries Institute Foundation (FIPERJ), participating in local initiatives in Arraial do Cabo to raise public awareness about algae.

Isabel is the first scientist-in-residence at CAPACETE.
